Reading Comprehension

Can they explain what happened in the story and answer questions correctly?

Vocabulary

Do they understand new words and use them correctly?

Main Idea & Supporting Details

Can they identify the most important information in a passage?

Making Inferences

Can they use clues from the text to figure out information the author doesn't directly say?

Text Features

Can they use headings, captions, diagrams, charts, maps, and bold print to help understand informational texts?

How Often Should You Assess?

Formal testing isn't necessary every week.

Instead, consider using your checklist:

At the beginning of each month
At the end of each unit
Every six to eight weeks
Whenever you notice your child is struggling

These regular check-ins help you notice growth that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Celebrate Growth, Not Perfection

Every child learns at a different pace.

Some children master decoding quickly but need extra time developing comprehension. Others become wonderful storytellers before they become fluent readers.

Progress is still progress.

Celebrate every new sight word, every smoother sentence, every thoughtful answer, and every finished book.
