Free Fruits Lacing Cards: A Fun Fine Motor Activity for Young Learners

Learning does not always need to involve pencils, worksheets or lengthy lessons. Young children also develop important skills through simple hands-on activities that allow them to touch, move, explore and create.
The free Fruits Lacing Cards activity from Tazamach Learning Press gives preschool and kindergarten learners an enjoyable way to strengthen the small muscles in their hands while becoming familiar with common fruits and colours.
What Are Lacing Cards?
Lacing cards are sturdy pictures with holes punched around their edges. Children guide a shoelace, thick piece of yarn or lacing cord through the holes.
The movement may look simple, but it requires children to use several skills at the same time. They must hold the card steady, grasp the lace, locate the next hole and guide the lace through it.
These actions help prepare young learners for everyday and academic tasks such as writing, drawing, cutting, fastening clothing and tying shoes.
What Is Included?
This free printable activity includes five colourful fruit lacing cards:
An apple
A pear
A mango
A banana
An orange
Each fruit has clearly marked circles around its edge to show adults where to punch the holes. The simple design makes the cards easy for young children to recognize and use.
Skills Your Child Can Practise
Fine Motor Development
Holding and pulling the lace helps strengthen the fingers and hands. These muscles are important when children begin writing, colouring and using scissors.
Hand-Eye Coordination
Children must coordinate what they see with the movements of their hands as they guide the lace through each hole.
Concentration
Completing a lacing card encourages children to slow down, focus and continue working until they reach the end.
Bilateral Coordination
Lacing requires both hands to work together. One hand usually holds the card while the other moves the lace.
Vocabulary and Colour Recognition
As your child works, ask them to name the fruit and identify its colour. You can also discuss how the fruit tastes, where it grows or how your family enjoys eating it.

How to Prepare the Activity
Print the fruit pages. Cardstock is recommended for additional durability.
Carefully cut around each fruit.
Laminate the cards so they can be used repeatedly.
Trim around the laminated edges.
Use a hole punch to open each marked circle.
Choose a shoelace, thick yarn or child-safe lacing cord.
Tie one end of the lace to the first hole so it does not slip through.
Adult supervision is recommended when scissors, laminating equipment and hole punches are being used.
Ways to Use the Fruit Lacing Cards
Allow your child to begin by lacing in any direction. Once they are comfortable, encourage them to lace through the holes in order or create an over-and-under pattern.
You can also extend the activity by asking questions such as:
What fruit are you holding?
What colour is it?
Is this fruit sweet, sour or both?
Which fruit is the longest?
Which fruits have a round shape?
Which fruit would you like to eat?
Can you count the holes?
What colour lace would look good with this fruit?
Children can sort the cards by colour, compare their sizes or place them in alphabetical order. These simple conversations add language, early mathematics and critical-thinking practice to the activity.
Create a Fine Motor Learning Basket
Place the prepared cards in a small basket with several shoelaces or lacing cords. Your child can then choose a fruit and work independently during quiet time, morning learning, travel or a homeschool activity rotation.
The cards may also be used in preschool classrooms, childcare programs, learning centres and occupational therapy-inspired activity stations.
