Learning Through Play: A Gentle Start for Toddlers Ages 2–3

Your toddler picks up a block and pretends it is a phone. They ask for “more milk,” turn the pages of a favourite book, or help put a toy into a basket.
These little moments offer opportunities to learn together.
Early learning does not have to mean long lessons or stacks of worksheets. For toddlers, it can begin with a familiar adult, a few simple materials, and time to explore.
That is the approach behind the Little Scholars™ Toddler Curriculum Bundle from Tazamach H.S. Academy.

A Year of Play, Discovery, and Growth
Designed for ages 2–3, this bundle combines a 12-month curriculum guide with illustrated activity books. Each monthly theme gives families a gentle focus while leaving room for repetition, changing interests, and individual pacing.
The monthly themes include:
Belonging and security.
Early language.
Following directions.
Fine-motor foundations.
Social awareness.
Early thinking skills.
Movement and body control.
Listening and comprehension.
Early literacy exposure.
Growing independence.
Creativity and imagination.
Preparing for age three.
You can follow the themes in order or revisit an activity your child enjoys. The guide provides direction without making each month a deadline.

What Does Toddler Learning Look Like?
It might look like rolling a ball back and forth while saying, “My turn. Your turn.”
It might mean naming the blue cup at snack time, helping a doll take a pretend drink, or looking for Teddy in the toy basket.
The activity books invite children to explore through pictures, stories, songs, movement, matching, sorting, drawing, and pretend play. Some pages offer space for marks or photos; others are starting points for hands-on activities away from the page.
The goal is shared participation—not completing every page.

Build Language into Everyday Moments
You do not need a special lesson to introduce useful words.
During dressing, you might say, “Here is your shirt.” During play, “The ball rolls.” At snack time, “More water?”
Keep your language clear and leave pauses for your child to respond. Their response might be a word, sound, gesture, sign, or point.
If your child says “ball,” you can add a little language: “Big ball!” There is no need to insist that they repeat the phrase.

Enjoy Books Without Pushing Reading
Toddlers can explore books by choosing one, looking at pictures, turning pages, listening, or pretending to read to a toy.
The bundle includes short stories, picture prompts, alphabet-song invitations, and opportunities to notice a child’s name. Adults model what words and print mean while keeping the experience relaxed.
Read a favourite story again if your child asks. Stop after one page if that is enough for today.
Exposure over performance is the guiding approach.

Practise Independence with Support
Small routines give children opportunities to help.
Your toddler might put one block away, hold an open cup with assistance, attempt a spoon, or help place an arm into a shirt.
You can demonstrate, offer help, and let your child try. Asking for support is welcome, too.
The activity books include adult guidance so these moments can stay manageable and encouraging.

Keep Learning Short and Flexible
A simple rhythm might be:
Say hello and sing a familiar song.
Try one short activity.
Move or enjoy free play.
Share a story and clean up together.
Begin with a few minutes and follow your child’s interest. Some days they may want to repeat a game. Other days they may prefer a book, a quiet moment, or something entirely different.
You do not need to turn every moment into a lesson.

Notice Growth Without Making It a Test
The bundle includes observation and reflection pages where adults can record meaningful moments: a new message, a pretend-play idea, an enjoyable story, or a helpful routine.
These notes are a way to remember your child’s learning. They are not a pass-or-fail checklist or a developmental assessment.
Notice the attempts as well as the outcomes. What interested your child? What support helped? What would they enjoy trying again?
