Free Sight Word Flash Cards: Simple Reading Practice for Beginning Readers

3 min read

Helping your child learn to read can happen in small, encouraging moments. A few word cards, a quiet space, and five minutes together can give your child a chance to practise what they are learning.

Our FREE Little Scholars™ Sight Word Flash Cards from Tazamach Learning Press™ offer a simple way to practise 40 common words at home, during tutoring, or in the classroom.

What Are Sight Words?

A sight word is any word a reader recognizes automatically, without needing to sound it out each time. Many words become sight words through repeated practice connecting their sounds to their letters.

High-frequency words are words that appear often in written text. This printable includes common words such as:

the • and • is • can • you • said • have • come

Some have straightforward spellings children can sound out using phonics skills they already know. Others include unexpected spellings that need a little explanation.

The goal is to help children understand and recognize the words through meaningful reading practice.

What’s Included in the Free Printable?

The Sight Word Flash Cards resource includes:

  • 40 word cards with large, clear print

  • Eight cards per page with dotted cutting lines

  • A parent guide with simple teaching tips and games

  • Eight blank cards for additional words

  • A printable cover page

Print the cards on regular paper or cardstock, cut them apart, and choose a few words to begin.

How to Practise Without Overwhelming Your Child

Start with three to five words, choosing words that connect to your child’s current phonics learning. Keep practice short and offer help when needed.

Try this simple routine:

  1. Say the word together. Make sure your child knows what it means.

  2. Listen for its sounds. Say the word slowly and help your child hear each sound.

  3. Connect sounds to letters. Point out the letters representing those sounds.

  4. Explain unexpected spellings. Show which part needs special attention.

  5. Read the word again. Then use it in a short sentence.

For example, in said, the s represents /s/ and the d represents /d/. The unexpected part is ai, which represents the short /e/ sound in this word.

If your child gets stuck, model the word, read it together, and revisit it later.

Three Easy Flash Card Activities

1. Find and Read

Place three cards on the table. Say one word and invite your child to find it. Read the word together, pointing to its letters.

As your child becomes more confident, let them choose a card for you to find.

2. Build and Check

Choose one card and read it together. Have your child build the word using magnetic letters or letter tiles.

Compare the finished word with the card. Talk about the letters and sounds as you check it together.

3. Use It in a Sentence

Choose a word and take turns saying sentences that include it.

For can, your child might say:

“I can run.”

For like, they might say:

“I like books.”

If you write a sentence for your child to read, use words they can decode and help with any unfamiliar words.

Keep Phonics Part of the Routine

Flash cards can support reading practice alongside phonics instruction and connected reading.

Continue helping your child blend sounds, read words with familiar spelling patterns, and practise with suitable books or short passages. Revisit the card words when they appear in those texts so your child can use their learning in context.

Notice the Small Steps

Progress may look like recognizing one familiar word, remembering an unexpected spelling, or reading a sentence with less help.

Keep the atmosphere warm and encouraging. A short session that ends with confidence gives your child a positive starting point for next time.
